One thing I read about Slovakia that called my attention was how many castles it had and has… the most per capita in the world! Today there are around 120 castles left, many in ruins due to lack of interest and maintenance.
Today I will share in detail one of them:
Previously known as the Pressburg Castle, this is the most beloved castle in Slovakia, a national symbol and one of the most impressive castles in Slovakia. It stands perched high by the Danube river and is visible from many places in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
The Castle of Bratislava had its beginning with the Celts, and later with the Romans. The Slavs used the foundation material left by the Celts and Romans to erect a castle structure with a wooden rampart in an area of 55,000 square meters in the 8th century.
In the second half of the 9th century, a new palace of stone surrounded by dwellings and a big basilica were added, this was at the time of the of Great Moravian Kingdom. The ruins of this basilica are still there. This is what they look like:
The castle building includes four towers (one on each corner) and a courtyard with a 80 m (260 ft) deep water well. The largest and tallest tower is the Crown Tower on the southwest corner. The 47 m (154 ft) tower dates from the 13th century and for approximately 200 years beginning in the mid-1500s housed the crown jewels of Hungary.
This is the main entrance to the castle.
Many parts of this castle have been reconstructed as it was greatly destroyed because of disinterest and wars. This is the beautiful new entrance:
The statue is that of Svatopluk I of Moravia who was a ruler of Great Moravia.
These are the beautiful new gardens:

Now moving onto another castle, here is the…
The Spiš Castle
This castle is located near the town of Spišsky on the North East of Slovakia. It was built in the 12th century and it is in the UNESCO list of Heritage Sites. You can read more about it in THIS blog. It includes some interesting legends!
This is a digital reconstruction of it showing how it may have looked in all its splendor:
I really like this one… it’s totally fairy tale look! SO gorgeous! It was built in the 12th century by the Kingdom of Hungary.
