Making a Yarn Llama

Among the many fiber based crafts sold in Bolivia, I really loved the llamas. I decided that this would be the first craft I would attempt to recreate. It was a lot more time consuming than I expected! Nevertheless it was very enjoyable.

I started by first looking at some ideas:

But then I saw this kit and this is what really gave me the idea of how to approach this craft:

So just like in that craft kit, I made some cardboard cutouts to give me that 3D look. These are my drawings for the patterns. It shows how many you need of each.

I used a Xacto knife to cut them”

Then I glued them in place and starting wrapping the yarn around the entire structure. In case you are wondering it took about 3/4 of a skein of yarn.

For the feet I decided to use brown:

Then I made the accessories. I braided a little string to place as a rein. I also cut out a piece of yellow felt for the saddle. I decorated it with a two color twisted string. I also made a couple of bags/pouches to carry things.

I made ears out fo felt too and tiny om poms to decorate them:

Tadaaaannn! Below you will se the finished version. Notice that I made a pom pom tail and little yarn balls as the goods that is will be transporting. I also used sewing pins for its eyes and I embroidered its mouth.
